Everything hurt. Pain stabbing, skewering into me and twisting. Blackness pulled at me, coaxing and loving, wrapping me in warmth and numbing reality.

I’m wet, but I’m not drowning. I can breathe, but I can’t take a breath. I sucked up air as fast as it left my body.

I wasn’t healing.

Why?

My bear was silent. Missing.

I’m dying. I had things to do, promises to keep.

Jeanie.

She’ll be alone again.

I won’t be able to hurt her.

I won’t be able to save her.

The ground was vibrating beneath me. I ordered my eyes to open.

They’re not listening.

It’s so quiet here. Cold. The pain is fading.
